John,
Sorry, didn't realize you wanted to change URL icons.
Merely that's not a problem either. Just right click the URL yous dragged to the desktop and then click the "Modify icon" button. It should load the contents of the SHELL32.dll file automatically, but if it doesn't, copy/paste the post-obit link in the field at the top: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

John,
You can practice it this way.
- Hit Windows key + Due east to open up File Explorer.
- Create a new folder and phone call it URLs or something.
- Move, or re-create all your URL shortcuts to that folder.
- Right click the folder and click, "Pin to start". Drag and drop that to wherever yous want on the tiles screen.
There'due south a style of pinning a alive tile to the First screen, but you have to use IE, then that's a big No,No for me since I use Firefox. Anyway, you'll detect instructions hither: http://www.hanselman.com/blog/MakeAWindows81PinnedLiveTileForYOURWebsiteInMinutes.aspx

John,
They're called "Favicons" actually and they take a .ico extension. Also, they have to be exactly square at sixteen x 16 pixels.
Once upon a fourth dimension, information technology was easy to copy a site's favicon merely by adding that word to the end of home page URL. That gave you a blank folio with just the favicon on it. All you had to do then was to right click information technology, "Salve film as" from the carte du jour and give it a name. The .ico extension would exist added automatically.
But sites take become wise to that trick and well-nigh of the fourth dimension, all you get now is a 404 mistake (page not found).
You lot can create a favicon from an image on your reckoner easily enough though by using an online generator similar this 1: http://world wide web.favicon.co.uk/
Or but google for "favicon generator".
